The Gingerbread House

Decorated Gingerbread has been used as a centre piece to many celebrations in Europe and the United States. This little American House kit (Buttercup cottage) was given to me by a friend. It has two rooms and an open back which made it ideal as a Gingerbread house as it could look like traditional Gingerbread fantasy and when it was turned round - hey presto, there was a two story cottage in 1/12 scale.

Twelfth Scale Gingerbread House

Gingerbread comes in many shades so my house was painted quite a light ginger to highlight the decorations. Once the house was built and painted the roof was covered in scatter glue and artificial snow. The roof of the side extension is covered with 'smarties' made out of polymer clay. The roof of the rest of the house has three different types of 'chocolate drops' also made from polymer clay. The ones with hundreds and thousands on them actually have a mixture of colours of glass accent beads which were pressed onto the drops before firing. All around the roof edges are clear icicles from a Christmas decoration. Around the base of the house are more 'smarties' and a few 'lollipops' made with polymer clay and a high gloss varnish. The chimney is faced with real brick slips.
